Unexpected Findings (1/4)

(Fair warning: I know so very little about archeology:) Set late S5)

Dean didn't know it could get so hot without everything just bursting into flames. His shirt stuck to his back, he was covered in dust and he didn't know how he was ever going to get his baby clean again. Bobby had sent word that something was picking off archeology students digging around the old Pueblo ruins in Arizona and finding the vampire had been nothing, probably the easiest hunt Dean had ever been on.

The problem was it was always harder to gracefully end a con than to start one and they were still there. And what really got Dean was how much fun Sam was having with this. "Isn't this cool, Dean?" he said, his face all lit up with nerdy joy under the floppy hat one of the interns had given him. "They're gonna clear rubble out of the canyons, they think there's a major find out there. No one's even seen the inside of these cliff walls in, like, a thousand years."

"You're killing me, Sam. Killing me." He tried in vain to brush some of the dust off his arms. "I never even knew you were into this stuff. If I'd known you would've been half this big a pain in the ass I would've told Bobby to stuff it."

Sam just grinned at him. "I wanted to minor in archeology at Stanford but the classes never lined up with the stuff I needed for pre-law." He grabbed Dean by the shoulder and dragged him along, heading toward the small knot of people clustered around one of the newly cleared cliff faces. "C'mon, it looks like they found something already."

By the time they got there the professors were already debating among themselves in jargon Dean couldn't even begin to translate, although Sam had picked it up pretty good. Dean still couldn't quite see what everyone was looking at, something on the wall, but nothing ever blocked Sam's view. "Dean," he said, the tone in his voice immediately snapping Dean to attention. "Dean, I think we should call Cas."

Dean pushed his way through a couple of taller interns and finally got a good look at the cliff wall – the wall and the enormous black wings scorched into the rock. "Yeah," Dean agreed, sliding his phone out of his pocket. "Yeah, that's probably a good idea."
