X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I would have written something last night, but I was so tired that the whole post would have been gambit pretty. fic plz.

1) A word of warning to Deadpool fans right off the bat: Bad Things happen to Wade. I am not kidding. In fact, some of you might want to skip the rest of this paragraph. I let out an audible *meep* of horror when I saw that Stryker had literally sewn his lips shut. Oh, Wade. I was really impressed with Ryan Reynolds in that fight scene; even though he could basically only react to things with his eyes, he did it well enough to show that Wade was still in there under all of the mind control.

Wade was definitely Wade in the beginning of the movie, though (the man was deflecting bullets like a Jedi); I liked his off-topic musings about the awesomeness of his swords and the "Okay, the people are all dead now!" line got a great reaction.

2) Logan does a lot of screaming to the heavens in this movie. I mean, I get that's one of Wolverine's things, but it got to the point where God couldn't get any sleep because someone was on his knees wailing with despair again, Logan.

3) And on that topic...look, the thing Silver Fox is most famous for is getting killed by Sabretooth. A good half of Wolverine's love interests only exist so that they can die and give Logan an excuse to howl at the sky. So I was very pleasantly surprised that there was a lot more to her than being just another one of Logan's Dead Girlfriends. Kayla had her own arc and motivations and even got what amounted to the kill shot on Stryker. She got to be a hero in her own right.

4) Even thought it was probably a trifle too long, I really liked the whole sequence With Logan on the farm; it had some great lines (although one big special effects failure) and the actors playing Ma and Pa Kent were really fun to watch. Although when Clark eventually comes home to visit he is going to be pissed. ("Ma! Pa! I'm home! I thought I'd surprise y...Ma? Pa? Nooooooo!" *drops to his knees and screams to the heavens. Logan's contagious like that.*)

5) I'm shocked at how much I liked Sabretooh. I'm as far from a Sabretooth fan as you can get, and I walked out wishing they would make a movie about him spanning this one and X1. Liev Schrieber did that good a job.

6) I'm convinced Cyclops was a plant. I think Xavier knew that mutants were being abducted, needed to know where they were being kept and put Scott out in plain sight as bait. It's the only reason I can think of for Scott being in public school with his powers fully manifested. With Scott there, he could use Cerebro to locate him (and must have, because Xavier got there pretty darn fast. And yes, Patrick Stewart made the cameo, although they airbrushed him so much trying to make him look younger that they made him look like a robot. On the way home we were joking that he'd stolen Doom's Doombot technology.)

7) GAMBT!!!! *squee* I confess, I'm an unrepentant Gambit fangirl so him being in the movie and not played by Jean-Claude Van Damme means the rest of movie could have been stick figure animation and I wouldn't have minded. That said, I really, really liked Remy; I got my stick-fighting and fancy card-shuffling and that's pretty much what I was there for. He had a very Han Solo-vibe ("Look at the sweet plane I won in a card game!" "Fine, I'll take you where you need to go, but then you're on your own!" "Look at me come in as dramatically as possible with the last minute save!") I loved his dynamic with Logan; if there isn't a fic comm for those two by the end of the day I don't even know you people. Whole fandoms have been launched on less than that over-the-shoulder-did-you-miss-me grin he gives Logan during the big save.

And I thought I was over this, but apparently I'm just as OTP about Logan/Rogue as I ever was, only now it's OT3 Logan/Rogue/Remy. I want fic set ten years later when Logan is settled at the mansion and Remy shows up to call in a favor, having done Bad Things and with sinister people after him.

As a whole the movie is a solid, noisy, enjoyable B, bumped up to a B+ if you're like me and watching Gambit stick-fight is worth the price of admission. It's nowhere near as good as Iron Man and not as well-made as Hulk (I've mentioned Robo-Xavier, and there's a scene in the farmhouse where Logan's claws are clearly CGI, to the point of throwing you out of the scene) although I liked it more than Hulk just because I care about the characters more. Go see it with a big crowd, because the geekgasms are frequent (just the mention of Gambit's name got applause).

I'm leaving this outside the cut so people will know: stay through the credits! Especially you Deadpool fans! I will say nothing else!
