SYTYCD: Week 2
Late to the party!
Evan & Randi, Jive: You could almost hear the other couples looking at each other after the performance and going, "Shiiiiiiiit." I loved it; lots and lots of energy, although the judges were a little more critical. Also, Lil' C said Evan had "divinity of movement." I'm still not entirely sure what that means.
Ade & Melissa, Jazz: I'm still not entirely sure what the dividing line is between jazz and hip hop. Good, though.
Jason & Caitlin, hip hop: They have Caitlin dressed like an 80s movie hooker. That was...not good. And Lil' C agrees with me. I didn't see any character work in that. It looked like a high school recital.
Brandon & Jeanette, disco: Oh God, disco. I don't think I've ever liked a SYTYCD disco routine. Brandon is definitely bringing it in that white suit, though, and that was one crazy good lift. Man, Janette is flexible; I've seen figure skaters who couldn't do these moves. ...What is Lil' C talking about? It's like he's been speaking in tongues all night. I agree with Nigel: it was tremendous. Although I wouldn't want him to scream like Mary.:)
Asuka & Vitolio, waltz: Let's see how this goes; every year it seems like the waltz eats one couple alive. Everyone wants to be figure skaters tonight. Vitolio has beautiful hand placement and they look amazing, lyrical. but man, I don't know. They didn't do a whole lot of waltzing in that. But hey, I know squat about ballroom. Mary's crying so clearly this works.:)
Max & Kayla, pop jazz: Apparently pop jazz is Moulin Rouge on a double dose of Ecstasy. Is Brian Freeman the one who choreographed the Two Kings routine a a couple of season ago? This reminds me of that dance. I don't know if I liked that or not; it seemed like it never got started. Not that they weren't good; Max and Kayla are my top couple, but I don't think the choreography worked for me.
Jonathon & Karla, contemporary: She has such beautiful lines. Jonathon seems really stiff to me; his shoulders have been up around his ears the whole dance. But again, apparently I know nothing: Mary loves it, especially him. I thought he was just s brick out there. BTW, Lil C thought it was "buck."
Phillip & Jeanine, tango: That dress is fierce, people. She is slinking all over that stage. I wish he was bringing more passion to things, because she's sure trying. He's a definite weak link in this dance. They had no chemistry; he was barely looking at her. Ha! Mary just corrected Lil' C on whether Phillip's knees should have been bent (yes, apparently).
Ashley & Kupono, hip hop: Oh Kupono. You are a gigantic dork. And also the least street person ever on this show, and that's saying a lot. I'm with Mary: it was okay. Kupono being hilariously unstreet makes any hip hop routine chancy at best. If I didn't know that she was supposed to be mirroring him I would never had picked up on it, and I don't think that was her fault. ...Okay, Nigel might be less street than Kupono. But only just. Never try to dance like that again, Nigel.
