Embers 1/2 (Dean/Cas, ...And Into the Fire coda)

(hope this is around what you wanted! Apologies for any typos I may have missed.)

Castiel was still so out of it when they got back to the motel Dean practically had to carry him up to the door. "C'mon, Sammy, open up," he said, kicking the door when knocking didn't seem to work. Sam finally appeared, his phone pressed to his ear and God, was Dean glad to see him.

"Hey, Bobby, yeah, Dean just pulled up," Sam said into the phone, closing the door and stepping aside to let Dean pass; Dean winced but was too busy dragging 180 pounds of angelic dead weight to defend himself. "Yeah, he's got Cas with him." A pause, and then, "You think I know? Like he tells me anything."

Dean dropped Castiel on the bed with a soft oof and sank down against the wall. "Dude, how in the hell are you so heavy?"

Cas just answered with a mhmm sound, face down in the pillows and not even making a token effort to move. Dean shook his head and helped him roll over, easing him out of his coat. He heard Sam wrapping up, saying, "Got it, Bobby. Yeah, I'll definitely kick his ass. I'll even send you pictures." He ended the call and gave Dean a what the hell? look.

Dean just waved that away. "Later, Sam. It's been a day."

"Hello, Sam," Castiel slurred, raising one hand in what could generously be called a wave.

"Hey, Cas," Sam answered back, sending a wary look from Dean to Castiel and back again. "So, who got who into trouble here?"

"I got myself in," Dean said, using his best we're not talking about this now voice. "We'll go over it later, promise, but right now I'm just fucking tired, okay?" Castiel was giving him that look again, that same stunned gratitude from the car and Dean couldn't deal with that right now. "Go back to sleep, Sam."

Sam almost burst out laughing. "Yeah, 'cause that's happening." He raked his hand through his hair. "I'm gonna get some coffee. You two want coffee?"

Dean didn't feel like drinking anything that wasn't at least 50 proof but Cas spoke up, saying "I don't think I've ever had any."

Sam's expression softened a fraction. "You got it." Sam paused by the door. "So, Cas. Take it you're sticking around awhile," he said, addressing Castiel but looking to Dean for the confirmation.

Dean felt Cas tense. "I...if that's all right." Sam cocked his head to side, studying them both; Dean could see he had about a thousand questions and Dean just glared at him, warning him off. He felt Sam zero in on the way he had his arm resting on the bed next to Cas, then he shrugged. "Hey, man. Dean's cool with it, so am I. Be like old times, right?"

Castiel stared at the door long after Sam left. "He doesn't trust me."

"Give him some time, Cas. He didn't have the whole up in Heaven bonding session we did." He saw Castiel take a deep breath, his hand again pressed over his chest. "Everything okay in there?"

Castiel nodded. "I tried to heal your soul, once," he said softly, almost like a confession. "When I first found you in the Pit. To take away the scars you'd accumulated, not just from the Pit but prior."

Dean raised his eyebrows. "That sounds like project."

Castiel's lips twitched up for a moment. "You could say that. I didn't account for how the energies of Hell would interfere with my powers." Dean felt Castiel's fingertips brush against his shoulder, against the handprint hidden under his clothes. "I burned you instead. I didn't intend that."

Dean shrugged. "Hey. No harm, no foul."

"I'm glad I failed. It was an...arrogant thing to attempt. Humans are made up of their scars and I didn't understand that at the time. It would have changed you."

"For the better, probably."

"No. I would have never known you."
