The universe gets shuffled and Rictor remembers.

Happy Yuletide reveal day! Just like the first time I did Yuletide, I went in resolving to write All The Treats and only wound up writing the one story (although at least this year I have the excuse of having signed up for two different exchanges as well.) X-factor was added to my sign-up at the last second when I realized it was eligible and I'm so glad I did, because my guys (and girls!)

(I had the revelation writing this that one of the reasons I fell so hard for Dean/Cas was because they reminded me of Ric/Star, which I've literally been shipping since I was a teenager. I have a type.)

(A few really, and Dean/Cas overlaps more than one. Which explains a lot.)

Happy New Year!

YULETIDE!

This year was an embarrassment of riches - I got two fics in the main collection (I went out on the pinch hit list, but I know I had a gift fic uploaded that earlier that day before I hit the list, so I'm wondering if those two were my original writer and my pinch hitter) and a treat in the Madness collection. All three were Into The Woods fics, which surprised me - I knew getting a Warriors Of Virtue fic was kind of a pipe dream, since that's very much a No One But Me fandom, but if I were going to pick one of my requested fandoms to win I would have put money on Tombstone. But it was an awesome surprise, because while I've read Tombstone fic I there's so little Into The Woods to be found.

And now there's three more!

the rope you began with (was never that straight): For all of her happiness, part of Cinderella is afraid of being stuck in a small story with the same few people for the rest of her life.

Absolutely fantastic Cinderella voice and it really feels like the original/DVD cast, my preferred one (especially Red!) The fairy tale cameos are to die for.

Beyond Ever After: It may not have been the happily ever they once imagined, but that didn't mean they couldn't try.

A very sweet, aching coda, this time from the Baker's POV.

Ever After: All is mended, and it's not just for today.

Just the summary made me smile. A quick snapshot of the Baker, Cinderella, Red and Jack pulling together after everything. I adored the description of their cottage.

***

Now assorted recs! I feel like I haven't even started digging through the archive (there are ten Brave fics, guys! TEN! And a 38K B5 fic!) so here's just a handful that completely knocked me over with awesome.

Bridges Unburnt: Faiza sets out on her own. (Captain Britain & MI:13)

♥FAIZA!♥ An absolutely perfect character study of Faiza and her awesome.

It's a love story for the new age: This is how the story goes:
“Marry me,” he says.
“Are you serious?” she replies. (Gargoyles)

♥FOX!♥ ♥FOX/XANATOS♥ (and the best part, hints of Fox/Xanatos/Owen!) This Fox is every bit as sharp-edged and messy and wild as she is in canon and her relationship with Xanatos hits every right note. It's like they all walked right off the show and into my computer.

Prisoner's Dilemma: AU: Set in a world where Miaka and Yui never appeared to fulfill their destinies as priestesses, Kutou and Kounan are locked in a seemingly endless war. Peace has begun to seem like an impossibility when the Emperor of Kounan is faced with a difficult choice that could spare his people. (Fushigi Yuugi)

Guys, I don't care if you've even ever heard of Fushigi Yuugi, read this anyway. An absolutely gorgeous AU (one that in a lot of ways has the potential to be a lot kinder and more hopeful to Nakago and Hotohori than canon ever could be.) I wish there could be books and books of this verse to see what happens next.

A Daring Escape: Carrier pigeons are very useful when planning an escape from a madman’s lair of doom. (Jonathon Coulton's "Skullcrusher Mountain")

Smartly drawn OCs and hilariously on point details. (the mentioning of a "rescuing-a-kidnapped-person discount" was my favorite.)

Go! Read!

BEARS!

Last week featured an out of town visit from the ex which turned into a "sleep on my couch for multiple nights" kind of visit (awkward city!) and a game session on Saturday that I expected to last 3 hours but wound up with people in my house past midnight, which DESTROYED my writing time.

Oh, and I had a momentary lapse of reason and picked up a DCSS pinch hit (which is done, which is where the rest of my weekend went.)

You know what you don't see mentioned there?

YULETIDE. FOUR DAYS.

OH GOD.

BEARS.

(I will get it done. Just, you know. BEARS. I haven't even had time to do more than glance at my DCSS gift fic. Writer, if you're stalking this post I'm not ignoring1 I've just been beset!)
misachan: (Sentry)
I was lurking in the 2012 Yuletide collection to see what fandoms are listed and found out there's a to-be-revealed Dark Avengers fic. I didn't even know that was eligible again this year! Super excited. (Even if by law of averages it will probably be about Daken and not Bob or Norman. I miss that book.) I'm in the middle of writing my DCSS fic right now but I have my Yuletide story plotted out and I've been collecting letters for possible treats.

How is everyone doing? Making good progress? Like your assignment? Find any particularly juicy treat possibilities?

(I'm kicking myself over not thinking to ask for Gargoyles, btw. What a fool I am!)
misachan: (Agent Coulson: Badass)
Finished a S6 watch with a friend last night (my emotions!) I know I'm pretty much the only person on the internet with this opinion but I love season 6, all the darkness and the red herring plotting and EMOTIONS. I wish Campbell arc had been better paced but I really, really dig that season.

Is there a [livejournal.com profile] super_disney or [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema for video games? There was a kind of dopey post on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants that made me realize how awesome a SPN/Final Fantasy VIII fusion would be, with Dean and Sam as Balamb Garden students and Cas as one of the Summons. And then Stuff Happens!

I want this badly.

***

I may have grabbed a Yuletide pinch hit. /o\ I haven't gotten confirmation yet but I love the fandom so much. *fingers crossed*

***

How is everyone? Tell me of your weekends! I'm desperately trying to finish my polybang before my artist thinks I'm a giant flake. Also, my [livejournal.com profile] dc_dystopia outline is almost 1K long. As always, I am doing this wrong. /o\
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
I got my Yuletide assignment and could not be happier. I know exactly what I'm going to write. Even the title! Now I just need my DCSS assignment to be just as awesome and I'll be set.

(And hello Yuletide writer! My letter is here and I am so, so sorry about the typos in my sign up. /o\)

***

We finally got power back at the office yesterday so today was back to normal. It's still scary as all hell driving around without traffic lights (you'll go two blocks with lights then hit long stretches while they're out, invariably at the scariest intersections) and the gas situation is ridiculous. The few stations open are gouging like crazy - gas is up about 75 cents a gallon on average - and you have to sit on line for hours just for the chance to pony up that money. A friend of mine waited for two hours today only to get told they'd switched to only filling up gas cans. Christie's starting rationing tomorrow to try to rein it in but I'm not touching my car this weekend. Hopefully over the next few days the situation stablilizes as power comes back in more places.

Ugh.

But my power came back on Wednesday and I'm lucky I was only out for two days - one of my friends might not get power until the 11th, and I was never out hot water or heat.

But again, ugh. I'm more than ready to squee over fic assignments after this past week, y'know?

And on the topic of Sandy, for those interested:

misachan: (yuletide kitten)
Hello, Mysterious Stranger! I'm thrilled you'll be writing for me and I can't wait to see what you'll come up with. (And if you're just here browsing through Yuletide letters while waiting for assignments to go out, welcome! If you're waffling on fandoms to offer or thinking about writing treats feel free to steal some inspiration.:)

I'm really easy to please. I love these fandoms and for two I've read very little fic for them so anything you write is almost guaranteed to make me twirl around with glee. Some particular likes and dislikes, if you're interested:

Likes )

Dislikes )

I'm repeating my requests for each fandom, with some elaboration here and there. Now with visual aides!

Tombstone )

Into The Woods )

Warriors of Virtue )
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
So the Yuletide tag set is up for public review, and apparently not only is someone burning to read fic about The Postman (the Kevin Costner film, possibly the most beige movie ever made*) some joker nominated the 2011 The Three Musketeers. The airship one, not the even Disney one with Kiefer Sutherland Athos-ing it up. Yeah, that was my face, too.

And then no one nominated the book!

There's only one response to that. )

But all my nominated fandoms got in so I'm pretty much honor bound to do this now. And while Left 4 Dead 2 didn't get in Human Target did! Whoo! (and I admit, I did snerk that no one nominated Ilsa.:) And the Thrawn trilogy's rejection is being appealed, which I'm super excited about.

(And sure, I could have nominated the book but I needed that spot to nominate movies about martial artist kangaroos. Priorities, people.)

*Tom Petty is, admittedly, pretty awesome in The Postman. I could write a story about Tom Petty. I mean, I won't, but I could.

***

I know it's been quiet around here, but I've been deep in the word mines the past week trying to make the [livejournal.com profile] polybigbang deadline. I have one finished (new Dean/Cas/Lisa!) and I'm well into the Avengers one so I'm hoping my the end of the weekend that'll be done and can put down a big chunk down on [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang. And get back to working on responses to the "Beat Cas with sticks" AU meme.:)

And Tuesday is my 9th LJversary! There will be a ~party~! Of the comment!fic meme variety, presuming I can figure out how to code those link banners!

please come to my party

***

So, the new Killers song, "Runaways." Someone's already made ALL the John/Mary vids to that, right? Because Jesus.
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
So this morning I'm all set to leave, literally have him hand on the doorknob when I hear Lexi chirp behind me (she chirps. It's a thing.) I turn around just in time to see her pounce an enormous freaking centipede, knocking her water bowl over in the process because she is a creature of unparalleled stealth and grace. I managed to step on the hideous thing (it was on my boot, ew, ew, ew) but by the time I shooed her away and cleaned up the water and refilled the bowl I'd blown a good 10-15 minutes.

End result? Bug eliminated, but the delay made me literally two minutes late clocking in. So I guess you win this round, nature.

***

So I think I know what I'm nominating for Yuletide this year! (I sat out last year, I'd signed up for Too Many Things, but I had a lot of Yuletide Envy come reveal time.) Here's what I wrote in the brainstorming post:

Tombstone
Characters: Doc, Wyatt, Morgan, Virgil (easiest picks ever.:)
I think Tombstone is fairly well known, just not well ficced and it's one of my very favorite things.

Into The Woods
Characters: The Baker, Cinderella, Jack, Red
This is the Sondheim musical and it's both streaming on Netflix and on DVD (with a fantabulous cast.) Post musical-fic, with second chances at love and found families and picking up the pieces, please. (I wish!)

Warriors of Virtue
Characters: Komodo, Grillo, ???? (any of the Roos, really)
WoV is a late-90's kid's martial arts flick about a boy named Ryan who takes a dare trying to impress the popular kids and winds up falling into a magical world where he befriends a group of kangaroo-people martial artists who embody the elements of fire, wood, metal, earth and water. As you do.

But let's look past the plot, such as it is; I'm a huge sucker for Crazy Overlord/Loyal Lieutenant dynamics and this movie might as well have been made for me. The villains really do make the movie and even them aside, the sets and costumes are gorgeous and the world itself is interesting. This is far from the greatest movie ever made but I love it with ever beat of my sad fangirl heart and just want to see any fic for it.

It's also currently complete on youtube. Please watch! (and I'd like to point you all to around 48:00, where there's handholding and Overlord asking Lieutenant if his Evil robes are flattering. I am not even kidding.)

Anyone else doing Yuletide? Whatcha nominating? Whatcha offering? *chinhands*

(BTW, please, please someone nominate Left 4 Dead 2 and Human Target. I was planning to offer those but no one's even mentioned them yet!)

***

While I'm in a begging mood, [livejournal.com profile] grasshopr_molly and I are doing the Round Robin meme here and you should all totally jump in. Mostly because I'm blocked./o\ 2014!Cas has been kidnapped by Mysterious People! For Reasons! You can decide the Reasons!
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
This was my first Yuletide and it was just and stressful and terrifying and exhilarating as I'd always heard it would be.:)

I wrote Masks Upon Masks (Kick-Ass 2010) for [livejournal.com profile] roga, who requested I loved Mindy's character throughout the movie, and when it ended I just wanted more of her; in particular, I want to know what happens to her when she grows up; I want to know who she grows up to be and what's it's like for her to grow up where she does. Gen or non-gen, anything works.

I loved this movie and Hit-Girl was my favorite by far, but this prompt practically threw me into a panic. I'd never written Kick-Ass and it was the canon I'd felt least sure of myself in (which of course guaranteed it was what I would draw.:) And I had such a hard time ending it. By the time I posted it I'd been poking it so much I was sure it was terrible and my poor recipient would be so disappointed, so I was floored by wonderful reaction it got. (It's been a long-standing truth that I have no ability to predict fic reactions.) I haven't even started responding to comments yet, but people, I love you all so much. You really made my Christmas.

I got three (three!) Human Target fics, which I'll rec properly tomorrow. Yuletide was so good to my show; the fic count more than doubled just from Yuletide.

***

I've been busy writing for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking (mine is here, BTW. Ahem.:) I didn't get to write anything close to the number of fics I'd planned for Yuletide, so I'm trying to make up for lost time.

***

Happy new year! May it be better than the last. Please, God, be better than the last.

Merry Christmas (or Happy Saturday) to all!

When will it be Yuletide? Whhhhhheeeeeeeeen????
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
Posted Yuletide. Stayed up all night to do so.

Now must get up and go to work.

Nooooooooooooo!
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
Just got back from cheering my friend on in a karaoke contest (in which he was robbed, BTW).

...I may be just the slightest bit buzzed on vodka cranberries.:)

I've been pretty clear on my feelings on Ilsa spoilers and discussion about S2 Human Target )

***

Still not done with Yuletide, but I'll get there, hopefully tomorrow. And I'm doing good with the treat I plan on writing. So yay.

I submitted a prompt to [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, as you do, and this is a prime example of how I'm terrible at comment fic because the idea's been percolating in my idea for the past two days and I kind of want to write it so much my fingers itch. And it's nowhere near comment fic length. This is not helping me fill stockings, brain!
misachan: (yuletide kitten)
I got hit with a h/c idea last night and decided to write it up for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, only it's now over 1K and I'm still not up to the comfort part and why can't I write comment fic like everyone else whhhhhyyyyy?

Ahem.

I'm also a little over 600 words into my yuletide story, so I'm really hoping I can get that done in the next two days. Ideally. Man, that would be sweet.

*sigh*

Lexi has been lethargic and mopey the past day or so (not once did she jump up on my mantle to destroy my action figures), so when I walked out of the shower today to find her sprawled pathetically on my bed it was time to bundle her up and take her to the vet. One ultrasound later they're still not entirely sure what the problem is --- could be something she ate, could just be some infection, could be pancreatitis (you can imagine how much I liked that possibility), but to sum it up they're keeping her overnight.

This is the first time she's ever been sick. I miss my kitten baby.

(And oh God, I'm going to be paying this off forever.)

I want my Yuletide assignment. I need something to salvage this weekend.

*sigh*
misachan: (Gus is one cool dude)
Forgot to mention, I managed to catch the Psych premiere earlier this week, and spoilers! )

I always double take when Zachariah shows up as the M.E. on Psych. Was it Woody's twin Zachariah was riding around in all that time, do we think? That would be a fun crossover, Shawn and Gus trying to solve that murder. There are no two people on less equipped to deal with Sam and Dean and Cas's crazy, terrible lives than Shawn and Gus. And let's up the drama a little bit more: maybe Zachariah asked Woody first and he said no. We know it works through bloodlines, so Zachariah just shrugs and goes to the twin brother. Just as good, after all, right? And then we all know how that works out.

Poor Woody. And Shawn and Gus would want to help out.

I want that crossover right after the Human Target one where Chance and Guerrero take one look at Lassiter and everyone's guns come out.:)

AO3 still won't let me edit my sign-up to offer JLU! What do I have to do? Let me iiiiinnn! *bangs on Ao3's virtual door*

ETA: I got it to work! Yaaaaaay!
misachan: (Tony)
Finally managed to sign up for Yuletide. I think. Good God a'mighty, my computer was not a fan of that form. To my utter sadness some of the fandoms I'd been planning to offer got winnowed out (is Trigun really still such a big fandom?), just increasing my chances of being matched up to write Echo Bazaar.:) If that's even how it works. I don't even know anymore.

Today is the last day of my vacation, since any day where I have to drive five hours does not count as "vacation" so much as day-I-collapse-on-my-couch-and-watch-Doctor-Who. Today we went to Provincetown and just strolled around looking at everyone walking their adorable doggies. BTW, if anyone ever has the chance to go there, there's a fabulous used book store where you have to walk under a metal gateway and go down a path to get to the front door. It's like finding a path to a magical kingdom, and then at the end are books. Sigh. Happiness.

So, how's everyone else's first day of Yuletide going?

ETA: Wait. Wait. JLU DID make it after all? Why did no one tell me?! Now I have to go back and deal with that damned form again so I can offer it!

Sigh. Question and Huntress better appreciate the things I go through for them.

ETA2: Electric Boogaloo: Why do you hate me, form? Let me edit you! *shakes tiny ineffectual fist*
misachan: (Sentry)
Hello, Yuletide writer! Let me say right off that I'm going to be delighted with whatever story you write; I love these characters and the prospect of getting a story about them fills me with glee.

I'm a big fan of plot; I love rescue missions and jailbreaks and jobs that go bad. I love characters doing stupid, reckless things to save people they care about; characters being beside themselves with worry even if (let's be honest here, especially if) they're the type who wouldn't admit it under torture.

I'm good with sex, good with violence but not crazy about non con, at least not with these fandoms.

On to the fandoms!

Fandoms and Requests and Pictures, oh my! )

Thank you, Mysterious Writer! Have a great Yuletide!
misachan: (Sentry)
So my [livejournal.com profile] intoabar fic has been sent off to beta so that's one deadline done. Now I can go back to working on my SPN fic in [livejournal.com profile] sharpteeth and editing the two in my queue. Yay for productive vacations!

But the real reason for posting is that the list of Yuletide fandoms is up! All of my nominated fandoms made it in, making the decision on what to prompt later this week easier. (Although I'm astonished that Leon apparently didn't make the cut. I thought it was safe! I didn't know!) And I'm saddened that JLU didn't seem to make it, although it looks like every other iteration of the DCAU is in there. Phooey.

Here are the fandoms I plan to request:

Human Target (natch)
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 (this is the first anime I ever saw, and still my favorite Gundam series. The prospect of seeing Gato fic fills me with glee.)
Forgotten Realms: The Sellswords
The Avengers (the Dark Avengers characters got folded in with the actual Avengers, which is fine as long as I can still prompt Sentry/Osborn)

And here are the fandoms I'm signing up to write:

Human Target
L4D2
Rurouni Kenshin
Trigun
Watchmen
Kick Ass
Phantom of the Opera
X-Factor
Echo Bazaar
Tombstone

I know ten is a small list, but this is my first Yuletide and I don't want to get in over my head.:)

Cannot wait for sign ups to start, let me tell you.
