[livejournal.com profile] selenak gave me E.

E is for...

Edward Nygma, of Batman comics, animation, and movie (but not the one with Jim Carrey). Hands down and forever my favorite Bat villain. Freakish intelligence warped by a variety of personality disorders, he's on record wondering when the hell the rest of the Bat villains went so completely crazy. He still remembers when it was all this fun game played between him and the Bat, a chess game with Gotham as the board, and keeps it on that level...well, more or less. He's figured out who Batman is at least once but kept the secret because, as Bruce pointed out, what's the point of a riddle if everyone knows the answer? He's never been the type who killed for the sake of killing (unlike some clowns I could name:) and currently has gone straight, becoming a legit private eye in an apparent attempt to passive-aggressively drive Batman insane. He's also one of the few Bat villains whose henchmen actually liked him. My Riddler of choice is Frank Gorshin, but Eddie's the villain I'm most hoping to show up in the Nolanverse---not just because he's my favorite, but because then I'll never again have to hear someone say Jim Carrey was their favorite Riddler. We do Not Speak of that movie.:)

Elizabeth Swann, of Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfairly overshadowed by Will and Jack's pretty, Elizabeth is that rarest of rares: a female character who actually drives the plot. Stubborn, selfish and sometimes astonishingly short-sighted, she's also independent and brave and remarkably quick on her feet, considering that she goes right from being pampered to dealing with zombie pirates. She's the spiritual heir to Leia Oragana in a lot of ways (tell me she's not thinking "some rescue" when the guys try to get her out of situations she already had well in hand, thank you), only instead of finding her scoundrel Elizabeth became one.

Emily Starr, of Emily of New Moon by L. M. Montgomery. Everyone loves Anne, but Emily was my favorite. She's uprooted from everything she's known and thrust into a new family that's seemingly hostile to her every breath, but she never loses her sense of self and doesn't apologise for who she is. She wants to be a writer in a time where girls weren't encouraged to want to be more than wives and won't be dissuaded from her path. She's not perfect; she compares herself to her brilliant friends and longs to fit in better with her new family but can't quite bring herself to change who she is to do it.

Elisa Maza, of Gargoyles. Do you know how badass you have to be when your allies are super-strong, magical flying creatures who have claws that rip stone apart like paper and yet they run for cover if you raise your voice? Elisa is that badass. And her mom is voiced by Uhura, so clearly it runs in the family.

Elizabeth Bennett, of Pride and Prejudice. Headstrong and smart and has Darcy wrapped around her little finger before she even realizes it. She just can't bring herself to take this game as seriously as her mother would like, but anyone who messes with her family had best get out of her way. She's the equal of any of the men in that book and then some.
