Oh, Fitz.

So in the Doctor Who novels the Eighth Doctor has a companion named Fitz Kreiner, who reminds me very strongly of Jack at times. In fact, if Jack and Jamie did the fusion dance the result would probably look quite a bit like Fitz, which explains a lot about why I like him so much. (I wrotea story about him, in fact.)

Fitz is from the '60s and has trauma from growing up the son of German immigrants during WWII. He was working at being a rock start when he met the Doctor and pretends to be a ladies man. I say "pretends" because...well, here's a quote from the book I'm reading now, Earthwold:

"...he recognized her. Early teens, blonde, bobbed hair and big blue eyes (a bit like the Doctor's, said the bit of Fitz that was forever consumed with the Time Lord - and then he mentally kicked himself for not even being able to look at a babe without thinking of the Doctor...."

"Consumed with the Time Lord.". This is a published, canon novel, people.

Fitz, this is Jack Harkness. Jack, Fitz. You two go off and have fun now, you have a whole lot in common.

There's a bit in one of the novels - god, I can't remember which one - where he basically admits in internal narrative voice that he'd sleep with Eight if he offered.

Fitz <3 <3

I mean, I love Jack to pieces, but he was in no way the first male companion to be canonically crushing on the Doctor.

I've wondered for a while whether RTD or Stephan Moffat was a fan of the novels and cribbed a little of Fitz into Jack, to be honest, especially considering the swagger Jack had when he was introduced. (Not to mention the Gallifrey angst!)

Moffat's storytelling style - ie, GOOD stories with sensical denouements, a deft touch with character development that doesn't smack you over the head with the WE ARE DEVELOPING CHARACTERS NOW, BITCH brick, and a subtle touch with the creepy, to be very similar to the better EDAs I've read. So it wouldn't surprise me if he was a fan.
