My show is so metal.

*dances around* Metalocalypse is back! I'm at the point where I want to draw little hearts and flowers around that show, I love it so much. The highlights:
Horrified as I was at the prospect that he might really have died, I wish they'd showed more of Ofdensen's funeral. That had to be simulanteosly the more brutal and hilarious thing ever. (I hope he made the arrangements himself in advance. God only knows what "the boys" would have put together for him.)
We also Hulu'd the first episode of V last night, which I liked but also had some reservations about. Observe!
The Good
The Bad
The Undecided
In short: I liked it, I'll continue with it, but V, I'm keeping an eye on you, mister.:)
- Baby Dethklok in that flashback! The lack of facial hair! And now we know that Toki wasn't the original rhythm guitarist, so I'm wondering when we'll find out how Toki found his way in.
- Ofdensen just casually blocking the son's punch. Not to mention Nathan demonstrating his leadership by responding to the "What kind of music you you play?" by growling out "DEATH METAL" and throwing a haymaker.
- Nathan's conversation with Some Guy, followed by that walk off the platform. ("Who's in charge of our security now?")
- Nathan's glasses!
- Dethklok's cost cutting measures. ("I didn't know 7-11 was a restaurant!")
- Toki had a little picture of Ofdensen in a locket! And I loved Pickles' attempt to comfort him: "We all miss him, Toki." "But then why does no ones ever says anythings?" "Because expressing your feelings makes you gay." The delivery on the line killed me.
- The unmitigated, speechless horror from the group when they saw Murderface's room.
- Then the crowning moment at the end, when Ofdensen is apparently brought back to life by the angels. Or, as is beginning to look more and more likely, is some kind of supernatural being himself. (Also, I will never get tired of him calling Dethklok "his boys.")

The Good
- The way they showed the saucers' approach; keeping the camera on ground level with the characters just ratcheted up the tension, and I loved how at first all you could see was the reflection in the buildings. It created a fantastic, claustrophobic foreboding (which makes the reveal with Ryan all the more fitting later; that whole scene perfectly captured how boxed in he must have felt in that moment.)
- Tyler's a brat, but he's also believably wide-eyed enough that I don't want to throttle him. Yet.
- I love the way Anna carries herself. MB plays her with a stillness that's very, very subtle, both alien and creepy.
- That quick glimpse of the lizard eye was nicely done.
- I like that the Vs are essentially using viral marketing.:)
- They seem to be going for more of a cult vibe to the Vs than the straight Nazi allegory of the original series. I'm actually wondering --- especially with the mention of "healing centers" --- if Scientology isn't taking the Nazis' place in this story.
- "Our scientists can't explain it." "Ours can." Yeah, I bet.:)
The Bad
- I thought they revealed the Vs true nature way, way too quickly. I would have much rather had the Resistance be a paranoid little group at first, with the audience not knowing whose side was right. I know everyone is assuming that the audience knows the Vs are lizard aliens, but a) that's just not true (I know two people who planned to watch the series who had no idea what was up with the Vs) and b), so? This is a reboot, the audience expects things to be different. It's going to be a good moment when Tyler sees Lisa's true face, but how much better could it have been if he and the audience made that discovery at the same time?
- The decision to have one of the only two CoCs actually be a lizard alien wearing a person-suit (and the other being his unwitting fiance, who he's lying to and protecting for "her own good") made me go o.0. Don't get me wrong, Ryan's my favorite so far (I have a weakness for that kind of noble turncoat; Robert Englund character was my favorite in the old series) but seriously, this is a white show. I mean, on one hand at least this proves there are "Black" Vs, which the old series didn't have, but that series also had at least two human Black characters by the end of the first episode (jive turkey talk notwithstanding. Hey, it was the '80s). I expect more from a show in 2009.
- The Vs are going to use our devotion. This could lead to worship...or worse, devotion. Did we mention yet that they could use our devotion against us? Because they will. And in case you missed it: Devotion=bad.
The Undecided
- Having the Vs be in hiding among us is an interesting twist on the original (the Good V, Robert Englund's character, came on the ship with the rest of them) and plays to modern paranoia about terrorists, but it's also a little...okay, it's a lot like Battlestar Galactica. (Anyone can be a
CylonVisitor! But it's only the first episode.
