I had no idea just how geeky the casting for the new Nightmare on Elm Street is. Over the course of the film Rorschach will get to slice and dice:

Emmett from Twilight. (It is Emmett, right? Unless [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's writing it I don't know from Twilight.)

John Connor from Sarah Connor Chronicles.

    Blonde Ruby from Supernatural

    Bart Allen from Smallville

And that's without counting Clancy Brown, better known as the Kurgan and the voice of Lex Luthor in everything. The only one of the main cast who doesn't have some sort of geek cache is the girl playing Nancy (which is hilarious, considering that if the movie stays true to the original she'll be the one to make it out. Maybe that's the secret?).

I feel like some kind of weirdo because I really liked "Victory of the Daleks --- more than "The Beast Below," which I liked quite a bit. The main plot was pretty throwaway, it's true, but I don't think it's a bad thing to have a straight-ahead adventure every once in a while. God knows the classic series had its share of "Sontarans attack but we defeat them! Yay!" plots. It felt like a breather episode, especially considering River Song's back next week and bringing the Angels with her. And there was so much character stuff hidden under the nonsense science that I want to take the episode apart with tweezers.

1) Okay, I didn't like the color-coded Daleks. No one liked them. I'm wondering if they're get individual character development (shades of the Cult of Skaro), otherwise I'm not seeing the point. I did like the Doctor mocking how fancy they were.

2) More signs that Eleven both has a temper and, maybe more importantly, a dangerous lack of patience. I don't think he was as out of control as he seemed --- he was trying to provoke a reaction, after all --- but he made the jump to violence very quickly.

3) I never appreciated before how much the Doctor has defined himself as the enemy of the Daleks. And did that ever come back to bite him; he was played every bit as expertly as Rose was in "Dalek." His mistake was assuming that the Daleks were taking this rivalry as personally as he was, when in actuality he was just a means to an end for them. I'm hoping this will let him be able to step back and take a breath the next time he encounters them; if he'd been able to keep his emotions in check and see how the Daleks were playing this the whole sorry situation might not have happened.

4) I continue to love Amy beyond reason. But oh, how telling is it that when the Doctor was trying to make Bracewell feel all he could think to dredge up was pain? It was all loss and death and horror and pain and then death again. That's why it didn't work --- if there's something the Dalek's understand, it's death. Then Amy stepped in and brought up love. The Doctor was looking into the past while Amy made Bracewell think of something that could be instead of what he'd already lost. (and I loved that Bracewell was another in the long line of robots the Doctor gets along with. It's the cyborgs who give him problems.)

5) Since it's still impossible to not be comparing them: I'm not sure Ten would have fallen into the Daleks' plan (say what you will, but the man could be patient when he felt like it) but I don't think he would been able to save Bracewell. In fact, I'm pretty sure we would have been hearing, "I'm sorry. I am so sorry," at the end instead of celebration.

6) I was watching the episode with friends and two of us just looked at each other in horror when Amy couldn't remember the Daleks. Either there's some memory wiping going on or we're dealing with parallel universes bleeding through the crack in the universe. And then there's the question of whether the crack is omnipresent or if the TARDIS is actually spreading it --- or as is more likely, if Amy is spreading it.

Next week we get River Song (who I adore) and more timey-wimey goodness. I hope the "Goes Ding When There's Stuff" machine also makes an appearance.:)
