Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

But probably not so much with the puns, since punning is not one of my dubious talents.

Story index here. Which I should probably update. Huh. Will do so now. Done!

So there's an unpopular fandom opinion meme going around, where you give a fandom and I (or, you know, whoever's doing the meme) give an unpopular opinion about that fandom but I don't actually think I have that many unpopular opinions? So I'm going to alter the deal (pray I don't alter it further!) and just make my unpopular fannish confession and invite you all to do the same? Cool? Cool.

Okay, my unpopular fannish opinion: I really liked S6 of Supernatural. Seriously. Not as much as S4 or S5 (my fannish sweet spots), but as much as S3 and actually a smidge more than S2. I really dug the way they structured it, with all the red herring plots while the Civil War/Purgatory overplot chugged along in the background until it exploded. It was dark and ambitious the way S6 of Buffy was dark and ambitious (something else the majority of fandom hated that I loved, so I just might not be a reliable source). I'm not saying the season didn't have problems - the Campbell arc in particular had pacing issues (I think I've said before that what that arc really needed was an episode where Cas got fed up with Samuel being a distracting irritant and threw him into an AU where his scheme worked and he got Mary back, just so he can finds out what a bad idea that would be) but I loved that season 1000% more than most of SPN fandom. The gut punch reveal at the end of Mommie Dearest is one of my favorite scenes of the series.

So that is my shameful fandom opinion!:) Tell me yours! (Or if you still want to do the original meme, give me a fandom and I'll see if I have an unpopular opinion to share. Or I'll make one up.:))

Fine, story, be that way. I'll just go make Clint sad until you decide to behave.
misachan: (Scandal)
While we're on the subject of fics someone should write for me, I really really want a story where Castiel has enough of Samuel's nonsense and tosses him into a future where his scheme works perfectly and he gets exactly what he wants --- and then he gets to see just how that would play out. (Because Cas is a Very Busy Angel with too many balls in the air and figures getting one distraction out of Dean's hair means one out of his, too.) Especially if said horrible future involves a badass, royally pissed off Mary Winchester.

So, yeah. That.

***

I stumbled over some exceptionally stupid anti-vaccination nonsense (the anti-vax movement is something I find just blood-boilingly offensive. If you ever want to see me completely blow my top in public, that's one of the ways to do it.) Now I'm all cranky.

So lets have a meme! (ganked from [livejournal.com profile] penknife)

1. Pick a pairing or a character
2. Ask me my particular head!canon regarding something about them
3. Post to your journal to share your own head!canon!
misachan: (stern Cas)
My top ten fics on AO3 based on hit count:

1) Black As Night Supernatural, Dean/Cas (2043): Dean patches Castiel up after a fight and things get a little out of control. Wing!Kink.

2) Learn Your Body Like a Nursery Rhyme in Braille Supernatural, Dean/Cas (1790): Dean's been trying forever to convince Castiel to let out his wings during sex. His persistence is about to be rewarded.

3) Outrun My Gun Supernatural, Dean/Cas Time Travel AU (1680): "The two of you are so stubborn you've made Heaven blink." Finally convinced that Sam and Dean will never say yes and accept their destinies, Heaven and Hell come up with a new plan, one that will redraw the Apocalypse and make everything run much more smoothly. All they need is Dean Winchester's soul.

4) ...And Into The Fire Supernatural, Dean/Cas (1469): Dean and Castiel may not have been getting along all that well as of late, but when the fighting in Heaven goes bad and Cas asks for help Dean can't say no.

5) Look, Up In The Sky Supernatural, Dean/Cas Superhero AU (1431): In this exciting issue we cast our eyes on the mysterious metropolis of Lawrence City, and its two valiant protectors, strangers from another world striving to save the helpless citizens from the most dire threats imaginable! As threats mount from without and within, can these two unlikely partners overcome their differences in time to defeat the deadliest enemy they've ever faced? Or in a world where smoke can dress itself in human skin, can this tale only end in tragedy? Face Front, True Believers, and find out!

6) Needle And Thread Supernatural, Dean/Cas (1308): The plan didn't go exactly how Castiel thought it would. Hurt/Comfort wing!fic.

7) Carve Your Name Into My Arm Supernatural, Dean/Cas (1290): When a fast talking witch hexes Dean to get rid of all his scars, he's surprised to find that includes the handprint, too. It's not until Castiel shows up that he realizes just how much trouble they're actually in.

8) Who If I Cried Out Would Hear Me Supernatural, Dean/Cas (1165): Dean goes missing on a hunt; Castiel can hear him but can't find him, and longer the situation drags on the unhappier Cas gets. An angry angel of the Lord is not someone to be messed with.

9) Masks Upon Masks Kick-Ass, Mindy/OMC (1068): She knows what Mindy wants. She knows what Hit-Girl wants. She has no idea what the middle even is anymore.

10) Cold And Sharp Supernatural, Dean/Cas (967): Dean came back from Hell with a taste for the rough stuff. Fortunately, Cas is willing to indulge him.

***

Stray thoughts - No surprise: SPN fandom loves its wing fic.:) And its smut, I giggled when I saw that Cold And Sharp was in the top ten. Easily the kinkiest thing I've written. Also no surprise that virtually everything there is Supernatural (the only outlier is Masks Upon Masks, which was a Yuletide fic); my Doctor Who fic is a couple Doctors out of date now, and I think DW fandom still does a lot of reading on Teaspoon, L4D2 is tiny and mostly active on FF.Net and Heroes is mostly dead (and Peter/Claude was never close to a big pairing.) And I am freaking delighted that Outrun My Gun and Look, Up In The Sky are in the top ten - I love those fics so, so much. Outrun was my first big bang-length fic (written in a month!) and Look was the first time I'd tried my hand at an AU fic (oh, my superhero boys. I have to carve out the time to write the sequel what lives in my head.)

It's really fascinating to see how reading patterns differ on LJ vs. AO3, too. Off the top of my head I would say that Who If I Cried Out and Exit Wounds are my two most popular fic on LJ, and while Who If I Cried Out was in the top ten it wasn't far and away #1 the way it is on LJ, and Exit Wounds isn't anywhere near the top. And Cold And Sharp is way higher on AO3 than I would have ever expected. Interesting.

I am super behind on this meme. I'll answer everyone, promise.

For [livejournal.com profile] grasshopr_molly:

He held out his arm to let the nurse take his blood pressure and turned up the volume on the television. "...mysterious outbreak at the Serenity Valley Convalescent Home has authorities baffled tonight. A CDC representative has stated that victims died from diseases ranging from scarlet fever to syphilis despite hospital records indicating no instances of infection before....."

"Emily, have you heard about this?" He tried to make a point of remembering the nurses' names; the psychologist had told him that encountering different names might help him remember his own, even if he was getting used to responding to John. Emily was the day nurse, then Fatima came at night (she was better at drawing blood, although Emily was always so nice to him he would never mention it.) Reggie was the orderly and the doctor's last name was Clark, although she'd let him call her Melinda when he'd asked. She seemed to think he was a good sign that he could remember things like names, that his short term memory being unaffected improved the chances of the long term coming back.

"Make a fist, sweetie," she said, nodding when he followed the command. "And I did. Terrible thing. They're even saying it might be a terrorist attack."

"Do you really think so?"

"Oh, I don't know," she said, unwrapping the cuff from his arm and writing on his chart. "They say terrorism for everything nowadays."

He nodded again, sure she must be right about that, and focused back on the new report. "...are looking for help from the public identifying two victims who police are saying may actually be behind this attack. Anyone with information on these two men," and the screen filled with looping grainy security camera footage of two young men entering the home, "are encouraged to contact the authorities." Just before the screen looped around the shorter of the two looked directly into the camera, allowing a clear, split-second glimpse of the man's clenched jaw and narrowed green eyes.

John caught himself. The footage was black and white, he didn't understand why he'd assumed the man's eyes were green. "What happened to those two?" he asked, nodding at the screen.

The way Emily's eyes turned sad made him shiver. He didn't understand that either. "This is the last thing you should be filling your head with," she said, patting his shoulder.

"I like the news." The camera panned down the street of the doomed convalescent home in a wide sweep, showing makeshift memorials and parked cars, a red sports car and a maroon minivan and a long, black, older car parked at the end of the street....

...he leans his head back against the seat and breathes deep, taking in the scent of leather and sweat. He hears a soft chuckle and the weight on top of him shifts, lips nuzzling their way up the line of his jaw until he feels warm breath against his ear. "Told you I wouldn't let you die a virgin, Cas."

"John, sweetie, you feeling okay?"

The flash disappeared as quickly as it came. "I...yes," he said, staring down at his shaking hands. "I'm sorry. I think I'm tired today."

"You have a visitor," she said, her voice carefully casual as her worried eyes searched his face. "Do you think you feel up to that? We can always tell him to come back."

"Someone wants to see me?"

"Seems like. Now remember, the doctor said this might happen."

He nodded. "Yes. There were advertisements." It startled him how fast his heart was racing. "Someone knows who I am."

"Dr. Clark also said you shouldn't rush things."

"No. No, I'm fine. I want to see him."

She patted his shoulder again. "I'll send him in."

A few minutes later he looked up to see a tall, blond man standing in the doorway; the stranger was handsome but looked...unwell in a way that made John's skin crawl. "It is you," he said, relief clear in his voice. "Do you have any idea how long we've been looking for you?"

"No," he replied honestly. "Who are you?"

"You really don't remember?" Something about that seemed to amuse him. "I'm your brother. Your older brother."

"You are?" John said, feeling his brow furrow.

"That's right. The nurses told me you don't even remember your name." When he shook his head the man said, "It's Castiel. That ring any bells?"

He frowned, turning the name over in his mind. For an instant that strange memory was almost close enough to touch, but then just like before it was gone. "That's a peculiar name," he said instead. "I think I prefer John."

"Very peculiar," he murmured, almost like a private joke. "Come on, Castiel. It's about time we went home. We have a lot to catch up on."

Meme responses! (From the Tell me about a story I haven't written meme here. Meme is still open, prompt there or here!

For [livejournal.com profile] inyourwings:

Sam stumbled in the pitch black corridor, swearing when he jammed his shoulder against a sharp corner. He heard the sound of movement coming from up ahead and froze. "Who's there?" he heard, a harsh, rasping whisper that settled at the back of his skull. The voice came closer. "Is someone there?"

Sam took the chance of pulling out his lighter, the dim light revealing a dismal hallway lined with metal doors. "Cas?" he said, keeping his own voice low. "That you?"

"Sam?"

The voice came from two doors ahead and to the right. Sam approached, holding the lighter in front of him and looking over his shoulder; when he held the flame in front of the wire mesh window he heard Castiel hiss. "Sorry, sorry," he said, moving the light away. He wondered how long it had been since there'd been any kind of light down here, if just the tiny flame from the lighter was enough to get that reaction.

"Where are the others?"

"What others? Where the hell am I?"

The dim light wasn't strong enough to penetrate into the dark cell, but he could almost feel Castiel giving him that eyes-narrowed look. "Oh." Sam saw the fingers of one hand thread through the wire, the only part of Castiel he could see. "How did you get here?"

"Lucifer. Lucifer, he showed up in a dream and said he had something he needed to show me. Does that mean this is just a dream, then?"

"That would be a pleasant surprise."

Sam could see Castiel's nails had been ripped out so recently it was only just starting to heal, his fingers covered with new cuts and old scars. "How'd you wind up in there, Cas?"

"Michael doesn't plan on executing prisoners until the war's over."

"Michael? What do you...." Suddenly the meaning behind that hit Sam like a truck. Oh God, Dean. You didn't. "Where are we?"

"Fort Angeles."

Sam blinked at that. "What, like Los Angeles?"

"Not anymore. Sam, did anyone see you?"

Sam shook his head, realizing too late Castiel probably couldn't see him. "I don't think so."

"You need to get out of here before someone does. The east doors aren't as well guarded as the others, that's your best chance. Try to take one of their swords, if you can."

"How many angels am I dealing with here?"

The way Castiel went quiet at that turned Sam's stomach to ice. "You don't know."

"Know what? What the hell's going on upstairs?"

"Nothing. Not for years. There are no angels in Heaven, Sam. They're all here. Michael's summoned the army of the Host."

It took a second for the full horror of that to sink in. "Okay. Okay," he said, strangling down the panic as he examined the cell door. "How do I get you out of here?"

He could almost hear Castiel shake his head. "You can't. Only Michael can open this door."

"I'm not just leaving you here."

"You have to. Head south. There should still be a resistance cell operating there." The sound of a heavy slamming door rang through the corridor. "Sam, go."

Sam touched Castiel's hand; the cell block was cold but not cold enough for him to be shaking like this. "I'm coming back for you, Cas. You hear me? I promise. I'm not gonna leave you here."

He felt Castiel's hand go tight on the wire. "Do you mean it this time?"

For [livejournal.com profile] aerilex:

And it wasn't like this was even the first time he'd died. Dean did a quick count and realized this was time number three, at least of times he could remember, and Jesus, what the hell was wrong with his life that he could even have that thought?

This was the first time he'd come to after dying to find himself riding shotgun in an angel's head, though. So that was weird. Especially since Cas didn't seem to know he was there; Dean wondered for a second if he was haunting Cas, but if that was true he had the feeling Cas would just be able to see him and anyway, he'd been a ghost before and it hadn't felt like this. He could only see the room through Castiel's eyes; there was a dead Reaper on the floor, a single stab wound through its chest. Dean was just relieved it wasn't Tessa, which also struck him as kind of strange. He wondered for a second if maybe that was Sam's Reaper, the first time it hit him that if he was like this, Sam was probably dead too. Shit.

Dean could see his own body laid out the bed, sliced up enough that Dean couldn't tell what had actually killed him. He felt Castiel's hand shake as he reached for Dean's shoulder, almost but not quite touching him, then he was gone in a whoosh of wings, dragging Dean along with him.

***

Man, it was hard to focus like this. The next thing Dean knew Castiel had some mook angel up against a wall, the other guy dressed in a black suit like the goons Zachariah tended to run with. "Where are their souls?" Castiel growled, and Dean tried as hard as he could to shout Cas, I'm right here.

No one heard. Dean felt Castiel shake the other angel. "The souls of Sam and Dean Winchester. What was done with them?"

The angel just responded with a vicious, toothy grin. "Your carelessness with your things isn't our concern. We had nothing to do with this." Castiel dropped him, drawing his sword; Dean could tell Cas was too distracted to see the other guy had beaten him to it. Cas, from your left! Pay attention!

Castiel pivoted just in time to catch the blade through the meat of his shoulder instead of through his chest, and Jesus, Dean knew he wouldn't have been able to tell by looking at him but that hurt. Cas swung his own sword, catching the angel through the throat and dropping it. Dean felt him back away as the bad guy's wings burned themselves out, bracing himself against with one hand against the wall.

Dean had never realized what a mess Castiel really was under his borrowed skin before. Dean could feel there were pieces of him missing, torn and scarred over with rough edges, and wondered if that was where he was supposed to be connected to Heaven. Dean searched out where he was bleeding from this new stab wound, finding the jagged edges of light that were about to become one more scar. Dean wasn't sure what he could do but the way Cas hissed in a breath when he tried to move made up his mind. He put pressure on the torn edges, pressing them back together, feeling Cas shiver at the touch. For a second Dean thought that was it, Castiel would realize he was there now but there was nothing. Castiel straightened back up, and if he thought it strange that the wound had healed so much more quickly than usual he gave no sign.

He flew off again and Dean was helpless to do anything but follow.

Woo.

Meme from everywhere!

First TV show I had self-insertion fantasies about:

Probably Sesame Street? I have vague memories of pretending I could meet Snuffy and Big Bird.

First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans:

X-Men comicverse. My family first got internet my senior year in high school (Web TV. For reals) and it was literally a matter of hours before I joined the Gambit Fan Club (remember email lists?) and from there I found CFAN and was able dive in headfirst.

(Unless wrestling counts? I've been going to wrestling shows since way before we had internet, but that's kind of like claiming I'm in the Jets fandom because I went to a game.)

Pairing in the first (m/m) slash fanfiction I read:

Something X-Men related, probably Bobby/Remy. First slash pairing I ever tried to write was Clark/Lex, though. Ah, Smallville.

First RPS/RPF I read:

I've never really been into RPF. When I was into TNA I shipped AJ Styles/Christopher Daniels, but even then I was way more interested kayfabe stories (them as their on screen characters) than standard RPS.

First fanfiction I read that made me think, YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write...

Oh, that's easy. "Split-Second Decision," by Lori McDonald, then her Gestalt Arc. There were so many good writers in old-school X-Men fandom.

Pairing in the first fanfiction I wrote:

Successfully wrote, as in posted? Probably Peter/Claude from Heroes. I shipped 9/Rose and 9/Rose/Jack hard but my DW fic leaned more gen, really. I tried to write Clark/Lex but never actually finished anything. My being anything close to successful at this whole fanfiction thing is a pretty recent development.

First OTP:

He-Man/Sorceress.:) (I remember my tiny self being so enraged when the show would push He-Man/Teela.) Oh, and Maria/Luis on Sesame Street! I still vividly remember those episodes!

First RPS/F OTP:

I guess AJ/Daniels? I'm still not really sure that counts.

First fannish friend I met in person:

Still haven’t.:(

First character I formally roleplayed:

Canon character? I played Rhodey in a game briefly but I don't think I have otherwise. I do a ton of roleplaying but even the online stuff has been mostly original characters.

Gah. I didn't make anywhere near the progress I wanted to this weekend, but on the bright side I did manage to finish some fics for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, so at least some writing happened, even if it wasn't the writing I was hoping for. /o\ (Mine is here).

To keep all my self indulgence in one place, here's my wishlist meme post:

Step One
♥ Make an LJ post. It can be public or friends only, whatever you’re most comfortable with. The post should contain your list of ten holiday wishes, and these wishes can be anything - from simple (a fan fiction written about your favorite pairing), to medium (a DVD you want), to really extravagant (a brand new laptop or car). Just make sure these are wishes for things you really truly want.

Step Two
♥ Skim through your friends list and see who has posted their own wish lists. Then - and this is the most important part - if you find a wish you can grant, and it’s in your heart to do so, make sure that person’s wish comes true. Sometimes a person’s trash is another person’s treasure. If you have a leather jacket you don’t want or a gift certificate you’re never going to use, give it to someone who wants it.

Step Three
♥ Post this wish list any time after November 1st. Then repost it two weeks before Christmas.

♥ You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday fairy - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not, it's your call.

♥ There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My Wishlist: )

So the GISHWHES winner is...actually, no one yet. Here, have it straight from the overlord:

Greetings Gishwhesheans!

The winner is... As yet undetermined.

Allow me to explain my process in judging the literally 10s of thousands of items submitted. As you know, I like to be thorough and fair, so I look at each submission for 5 minutes without blinking. Then, I record my impressions in essay form. (If I blink, I start the clock again.) Then, to make sure there is not a circadian bias, I also recheck each submission at midnight, sunrise, high noon, and sunset, and again record my feelings, this time in the form of improvised song.

Also, to make sure I am really giving each masterpiece its due, I dream about the items during brief concussion-induced black-outs throughout the day and when I come to, I paint my dreams in oil on large canvases. As a final precaution, to eliminate human error, I share my essays, songs, and paintings with a particle physicist, a statistician, an ordained priest, and a psychotherapist, and make an audio recording of their feedback in an invented language only we speak. Then, and only then, do we assign points. While this is obviously an efficient process, it does take some time.

I anticipate announcing the winning team at least 18 hours before our trip to Rome in April. That should give you enough time to weave a monkey hat, throw on your leaf or cotton candy suit, and hitch a ride on one of our now infamous flying Christmas trees to join me in Rome.

Please stay tuned to the updates page for...well...updates and other things.

Also, by popular demand, we will be soon be opening our official GISHWHES 2011 Novelty shop. What else would we offer there but a GISHWHES coffee table book with images & quotes, a special calendar, t-shirts, and of course, aerosol cans of Official GISHWHES 2011 Fish Spray (while supplies last)?

I'd like to gab with you further, but unfortunately, I've got 1,032 items to look at today, starting with Item #64 (a live bull taken to a boxing match in Mexico) which is strange, because I'm looking at a picture of a child's stuffed cow propped in front of a magazine advertisement of a boxing match from 1972.

Thank you for following the Rules of the hunt.

And that's why I love you,

Misha.

If anyone's wondering what's he means about infamous Christmas trees, that would be how one of the teams attached so many balloons to a Christmas tree that it flew away.

The world is lucky the man uses his absurd power for good. Or at least for lolz.

Who else is signed up for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking? If you are, leave a link here so perhaps a Christmas elf will leave you a present! Assuming the elf still has anything left in the tank by then, of course.

The very first Dean/Cas fic I ever wrote was for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, and fills I did last year were my first little baby steps into the fandom, so I'll always have a soft spot for it. (mine's here)

Also, I left so many prompts in this today:

You should too! (It could use more SPN prompts! Incredibly obvious hint!)
