R.I.P. Michael O'Hare

I'm one of the relatively few B5 fans who loved Season 1 and especially Jeffery Sinclair - wounded war vets trying to rebuild their lives with their scars will fresh will always have an easy road into my heart. I loved his dry sense of humor and his friendship with Garibaldi and the kind of quiet courage be brought to Babylon 5.

We are all star stuff. God speed, Commander.

I'm behind on the fanfic meme, but hey, let's do this one too!

The one who seduced you, screwed you over, broke your heart in a million pieces, and laughed about it.

Smallville. I was surprised a week or so ago to realize how many ~feelings~ I still have about Smallville. And more accurately, with Smallville it's more like "the one who seduced you then changed into a completely different person but still showed just enough flashes of the one you fell in love with that even though it was completely over when they said 'hey baby, c'mon, give me one last shot, it can be like the old days,' you listen and get your heart stomped on all over again."

Ahem. Like I said. ~feelings~

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp

Left 4 Dead 2. Nick/Ellis is my happy funtime pairing.

The mysterious dark one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 AM at weird coffee houses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized s/he really was fucking crazy.

Watchmen. I've never in my life had such a hard time writing for a canon I loved so passionately.

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor and whom you'd still really like to get with again, although you're relieved s/he doesn't actually live in town

Heroes. Someday I'll finish that Five Years Gone Peter/Claude story I've got plotted out somewhere.

The steady

Doctor Who. My forever show, whether or not I'm currently writing fic for it.

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with.

B5, Star Trek and Star Wars. I love all those canons but I've rarely felt the urge to write for them or seek out fic, although I'll happily devour anything recced to me (the exception to SW is Thrawn/Pelleaon, but I still haven't actually finished anything for them.) Harry Potter, too.

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with, but ultimately you're just good buddies

Firefly. Jossverse in general, really.

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool person except it's never really gone anywhere.

Sherlock? Maybe when I watch that last episode.

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at them and thinking, "How the hell did they land all these cool people?"

This is exactly how I felt when SGA took over my flist back in the day.:)

The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and against whom you measure all other potential partners:

Oh, X-Men fandom. I'm only on LJ in the first place because I followed the comics!fic writers here.

The one you recently met at a party and would like to get to know better:

Oh, Human Target. How our romance was cut tragically short!

The old flame that you wouldn't totally object to hooking up with again for a one night romp if only they'd clean up a bit:

Iron Man movieverse. I honestly don't think I've read or thought about writing fic for Iron Man since the second movie. Maybe when the Avengers movie comes out.

Your hot new flame:

I suppose this would have to be Supernatural? But really, SPN is more, "That fun friend you never really saw that way but who came back from summer break with an awesome new haircut that made you go, "Hey, why not? Could be fun," then a month later you're living in his apartment and you haven't left the house in days and even though you know it's going to end in tears you're having so much fun you don't care."

The one who stole your significant other:

...Can I say Smallville again? I feel like the later seasons did that to the show I loved.

For those B5 (and Grease and Taxi) fans who may have missed the news, Jeff Conaway died Friday at the age of 60.

On Babylon 5 he played Zack Allen, and one of the joys of that show was watching Zack grow from Security Guy #2 to Chief by the end of the series. Zack didn't have an epic destiny, he didn't face down gods or lead armies or become a prophet. He didn't even get the girl (although I would have liked that story for Lyta a whole lot better than the Byronic mess her life turned into.)

Zack's role was more important than that. Zack was us, the audience, the guy who went to work everyday, tried his best, and had to make all those everyday decisions that come with that. How good intentions can go south, and how much it sucks to have to stand up to your peers and coworkers and tell them they're wrong.

You were the best, Zack. When B5 was put in your hands we knew she'd be all right.

Doing the rewatch and seeing Kosh again in all his cryptic glory really struck home for me that the reason Dean/Cas pinged so hard for me was because it reminded me so much of Sheridan and Kosh. (Which just means I have a type.) The cryptic, unknowable orders! The frustrations and misunderstandings and ~destingy~ and tragic sacrifices!

I wish Sheridan and Dean could sit down and talk. John could probably give him some good advice.

***

Watching All Quiet On The Western Front on TCM, a movie that frankly is kind of a miracle. This is a war epic made one year after the advent of sound and so much of the vocabulary of modern cinema is already there. You can see so many war tropes --- the salty scrounger, the naive recruits, the corrupt, distant officers and jaded veterans --- being codified right before your eyes.

The 30's were a fantastic time for film, sheer experimentation in the beginning and subversion at the end.

I think it's just about time for the annual Babylon 5 rewatch.

Yes. Yes, I believe it is.

ETA: Oh hell. I posted that before seeing that Jeff Conaway just passed away at 60. Rest in peace, Zack.

Three of my loves: Deadwood, Tombstone and Brian Kinney on QAF. So you could imagine that when Gale Harold showed up on Deadwood playing Wyatt Earp I was all a-squee. I really liked show's the dark take on Wyatt and Morgan; one of my biggest disappointments with how the show "ended" was that we never got any resolution on that storyline. I would have paid good money to have had a "The Earps and Doc Holliday raise hell in Deadwood" story.

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/98857000/1380759

Oh, Guerrero. I still haven't posted about that last episode, but I'm still all "oh, my heart about it. *Sigh* Needless to say, Guerrero is my favorite character and I like the framing of this shot.

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/93166936/1380759

Kosh. Kosh is my favorite character on B5, another in a long line of cryptic mentor figures living in my heart. spoilers )

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/89328138/1380759

My OTP! These two had me the moment she called him "Baby Doll." Fun and flirty and hopelessly head over heels for each other. This is also my general Squee! icon.

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/103367571/1380759

The Crow is one of my favorite movies. I saw it for the first time at 14 in an empty theater and cried my eyes out, and it still hits me every time I see it. Eric lighting up the fire crow after taking out T-Bird is such a striking visual and just a gorgeous shot.

I discovered a new drabble comm! [livejournal.com profile] slashthedrabble! I belonged to a Heroes drabble comm back when that fandom was more active and always had a lot of fun with it. And the best part is that it's not just strictly 100 words; you can write a classic 100 word drabble or stories of precisely 200, 300, 400, or 500 words.

This week's prompt is the Evil Overlord list! Come play!

I'm watching "The Wheel Of Fire" (Babylon 5 S5) and I just about clapped like a seal at the "You're not the only one who's been touched by the Vorlons." THAT'S WHY YOU'RE MY FAVORITE, JOHN!

Can anyone score me a GIF or icon of quick spoiler for Lochley awesomeness )? I kind of want to watch that over and over.

(Lyta's not bothering me nearly as much on this watch-through, and I sympathize with her, I do, but damn. That was satisfying.)

01. If you'd like, comment to this entry saying 'ICONS!' and I will pick 6 of your icons.
02. Make an entry in your own journal and talk about the icons I picked!

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] selenak, who asked about:

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/93166936/1380759

The full quote: "Understanding is a three edged sword. Your side, their side, and the truth." Kosh is my favorite B5 character (not that I don't love Londo and G'Kar like everyone else.:) I have a weakness for mentor figures, especially flawed mentors dealing with Chosen Ones who just won't do what they're told, and Kosh hit all of those buttons perfectly. I love how his relationship with Sheridan builds over seasons two and three, culminating in that heartbreaking dream in "Interludes and Examinations." Inscrutable, seemingly all-powerful and all-knowing Kosh admitting to John, "I was afraid," absolutely kills me every time I see it. (icon made my [livejournal.com profile] curtana)

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/91917409/1380759

Supernatural came up at --- I don't even remember, I think it might have been fandom_rant on Journalfen --- and one of the posters made the comment that the main bone of contention with a lot of fangirls seemed to be that Bela regularly outsmarted Sam and Dean.:) The whole conversation made me go, Man, I need a Bela icon because I loved that girl. Of course in a world like Supernatural there would be a market for talismans and such, and of course there would be people there to take advantage of it. I loved how she had no interest in the boys' ever-present drama and was all about saving her own skin. I completely believe that had she been a sexy but still amoral male thief she would have been embraced by fandom instead of written out after one season --- hell, she would have been the show's Gambit. And I love this icon of her; she looks glamorous and gorgeous and with just a little bit of a smirk. (icon by [livejournal.com profile] ladymason)

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/91917467/1380759

Ah, Phantom of the Opera. POTO is one of my oldest fandoms; when I was ten I used to listen to the cast recording on cassette over and over, trying to will myself into the music. For all of the movie's flaws (Mild sunburn!) I adored how they staged "Point of No Return"; the chemistry between Erik and Christine in that scene practically ignites the film. Ah, doomed, impossible, dysfunctional love. This is the only icon on this list I actually made, and I'm really happy with the composition and especially the way the text looks.

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/62875045/1380759

Look at how cute Ten is here! That kitten is totally staking her claim on him; I love his smile and the curve of his head. He just looks happy and relaxed and the whole effect is so sweet. This does double duty as my Ten icon and a KITTEN! icon.

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/92734667/1380759

"...go out and round up everyone who knows more than they do." I'm a little bit in love with My Chemical Romance's version of "Desolation Row" from the Watchmen soundtrack, so I would have grabbed this even if I didn't like the composition as much as I do. I love how small Rorschach looks climbing up that building, about to unwittingly set off that horrible chain of events that lead to Antartcica, and the way the text seems to be pressing in on him. Oh, Rorschach. This also serves as my general music discussion icon. (icon by [livejournal.com profile] sarah531)

http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/92468679/1380759

That GQMF is Jarlaxle Baenre, my favorite Forgotten Realms character. This is taken from the mass market paperback cover of Servant of the Shard and is just such a striking picture of him. Jarlaxle leads an elite mercenary group, has a magic item for every occasion (hatband of holding. For real), has so much subtext with assassin and fellow badass Artemis Entreri that they got their own book series and is generally the smartest guy in the room. I use this for fantasy and RP discussions.
misachan: (Jarlaxle)
We're rewatching Babylon 5 from the beginning and we've just reached the first episode with Draal and the Machine. Draal's comment that he feels like it's time to "go to the sea" sparked a discussion about how the Minbari are essentially space elves, particularly LOTR elves: remote and spiritual and with still, deep emotions, a race capable of esteeming both art and war. Meanwhile the Narn are space Orcs, but more of the general Fantasy variety, warlike and quick to anger and cut throat even amongst themselves.

And the Centauri...the Centauri are dragons. Declawed, defanged dragons who used to rule but then went to sleep; when they woke their hoards had been raided and there were all these strange other races standing in their place.

In case anyone's forgotten, Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recommendations. Ivanova is god.
misachan: (Bela)
So we finished off the first disc of S4 and I'm already dreaming about Castiel. Considering my history of fangirling mysterious, lawful mentor figures having to deal with chaotic Chosen Ones, this should surprise absolutely no one.

In fact so far Castiel is reminding me very strongly of Kosh, full of cryptic warnings and mysterious appearances and absolutely no idea of how humans work. Even that one flash of self-righteous anger, the "You should show me some respect," reminded me of Kosh lashing out at John in Interludes.

And I find it fascinating that Dean has warmed up to him so quickly (he calls him "Cas!"), especially since his relationship with Sam is starting to get rocky from trust issues.

***

Reed Diamond was in the episode of CSI that just went off. Between that and Monk, that's the second show he's randomly showed up in the last week. I approve.:)

I can never get over commercials advertising Dethklok concerts alongside normal bands.

ETA: Hey! Bly! That keeps CSI on.

I just started Splinter of the Mind's Eye and man, it is uncomfortable hearing Luke rhapsodize about Leia. Obviously the book came out in 1978 and Alan Dean Foster had no way of knowing that ROTJ would fill his book with creepy subtext, but still. I'm justifying it to myself as the Force trying to tell him that there's a connection between he and Leia and Luke is just hilariously misinterpreting.

This week's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Name 5 characters you initially found appealing, but eventually came to hate.

1) Kyp Durran (Star Wars EU): Seriously. When I finished the first Jedi Academy book I turn to Fiance and said, "I don't know why everyone hates Kyp. I kind of like the kid." He pretty much grinned and said to read the rest of the series and report back. Yeah. The honeymoon period ended real quick.

2) Lyta Alexander (Babylon 5): This is kind of a cheat, because while I liked Lyta well enough in the pilot when the series proper started and Talia showed up I remember thinking "Oh much better." And I can't put my finger on why; believers and fanatics are usually characters I'm all over (see John Locke), so I don't know why Lyta leaves me so cold. Part of it is irrational (I wanted Talia back, not a Token Telepath replacement), but even putting that aside there's a brittle neediness to the character that's a turn off. And I hated her jealousy towards Sheridan and his relationship with Kosh (Interesting? Yes. Likeable, not so much.) Then came the Mind War and Byron and I was pretty much done with the character.

3) Sam Rappaport (One Life To Live): This was a combination of character derailment and an actor change. Sam came on the show as a former mentor of Todd's and a stabilizing influence, and I liked him right off the bat. Kale Brown was fun to watch and had great chemistry with the rest of the cast, and it helped that he was older and not generically soap opera handsome. Then Brown left and the role was recast with Laurence Lau and it all went downhill.:) Lau wasn't a bad actor but he was miscast; he was a good ten years younger and Sam's relationship with Todd turned combative and weird. It didn't help that for a while the writers had him romancing Blair, Todd's love interest, which just turned everything vaguely incestuous. When they finally killed him off I cheered.

4) Niki Sanders (Heroes): Oh, Niki. Niki was actually my favorite female character at the beginning, but as it progressed I thought the DID backstory was tired (and very OLTL!) and her arc never matched the scope of everyone else's. Then she got DL killed and later told Micah that trying to be a hero was what got his father killed and that was that. I'm glad I like Tracey, because I always thought Niki was well played, just not interesting.

5) Meldrick Lewis (Homicide: LOTS): This is another irrational one. The aftermath of the Mahoney shoot gutted me and I never saw Lewis the same way after, even though looking back I can't say any specific thing he should have done differently. It's an emotional, gut reaction that he didn't do right by Kellerman and I still have a hard time rewatching episodes that focus on Lewis.
