Guys, I completely forgot to tell you about my AWESOME DREAM. For those new to my brain, I frequently have dreams I'm not even in, or in just as an observer (and yes, I've had more than one dream where I was watching TV. I never claimed to be a ball of excitement.)

Anyway, in my dream Sam and Dean were watching Lord of the Rings (Fellowship, in particular) for reasons that escape me although I'm reasonably certain it was Sam's idea. Cas zapped in to talk to them about something or other but got distracted by the movie and sat down to watch, too (which drove Dean crazy, because he was more than ready to move on to anything that didn't involve hobbits). Something - I don't remember what - really piqued Cas' interest and he started asking a lot of pointed questions, ones with a lot of canon detail he really shouldn't have been able to know. Finally he asked who the writer was, Dean told him "that dude who made King Kong," and Sam smacked him and said it was Tolkien, which got Cas really excited.

It turned out that Tolkien had been a prophet, but instead of seeing the future he saw the past - which meant that with some liberties taken for the sake of fiction everything in LotR canon had actually happened but had been wiped from humanity's collective memory.

Then some time passed and Cas showed up while Dean was working on the car, said something along the line of "Do you remember our conversation about the past?", then when Dean opened his eyes he found himself in the middle of an orc battle. And was very "son of a bitch" about the whole thing.:)

And I know at one point Cas went to go see Gandalf but don't remember what happened. Which is too bad because that had to be hilarious. (they are both angels, after all.)

Oh! And Sam was fluent in some flavor of Elvish. Because of course he is.:)

I'm currently in the untamed frontier that is Pennsylvania at my friend's lake house to celebrate his birthday with only the internet on my phone to stave off the shakes. I'll try to answer comments as best I can, but if I'm slow being sans computer would be the answer. So far we've played Dominion and Clue and I've lost at both, although I was completely right that Miss Peacock was the killer.

Speaking of my computer, I'm using the weekend away to finally get it into the shop to figure out why it's stopped charging. (my old charger died overnight and since then the laptop has worked while plugged in but refused to except any sweet, sweet electricity. The preliminary diagnosis was that it's either the battery, slightly expensive but easily fixable (\o/) or a motherboard problem (noooooooo). If feel weird asking this, but if any of you could send good thoughts that it's a simple fix I'd really appreciate it. I ready can't afford a new one right now, and me and that laptop have had some good times.

I've had two Baileys and a vodka cranberry. Such a lightweight. And now time for Zombieland.

*hugs* to you all.

ETA: still totally up for the "asks me about a fic and I'll tell you 3 things about it" meme. If you've ever had a question, how's the time!)

LJ! How I've missed you! *hugs!* I can answer comments!

DDOS attacks aside, I've been so buried in RL work that I haven't been able to touch my computer in days. That's going to be the state of affairs for this weekend too, sadly, but I'm carving out some happy internet/writing time tonight in the desperate hope I can get this story done.

I did have a remarkably good day. Nice, quiet, Got Stuff Done. I hate to say it, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that my supervisor has been out for three days. I love the woman, I do, but she's a walking ball of stress and she makes everyone around her a ball of stress.

What else...ooh, yes, on Tuesday I came home to find the fairies had left Supernatural: the Anime on my doorstep (because my family loves me and wants me to be happy and enables my dorkiness). I haven't gotten the chance to do more than stare lovingly at the cover, but I'm looking forward to it. There's a good mix of anime original content mixed in the the episode retellings, and I can't tell you how pleased I am to have new sort-of canon to carry me through the long, long wait until Sept. 13. And honestly? I'm really interested in how Sam and Dean talk in Japanese. I've never seen a Western show translated into Japanese like this (plenty the other way around, of course) and I'm wondering if my guesses will be on target. I'm betting that Dean's the type to throw omae around when he's not playing a role, and I'm wondering if Sam will be using boku in the beginning and if that will change (the time span mixes seasons 1 & 2, ending with "All Hell Breaks Loose."). And I'm really curious what Sam will call Dean in Japanese; I can't think off the top of my head of an anime where a younger brother calls the elder by name all the time, so it should be some kind of honorific. Nii-chan feels a little young. Ani-ki, maybe?

(This is why I'm hoping they do further seasons so we can get to the angels, aside from the fact that anime loves drawing angels: I'm dying to know how they'll talk. What "you" will Cas use? Would he use a different one for Dean? (doujins would spontaneously spring into being if that were the case. Would it start to drift as he starts falling in S5? Would the angels use the same gender divided way of speaking as the humans or would Anna's word choice be the same as Cas or Uriel's? Language is awesome!)

Yes, I'm a nerd. As you were.

Thirty Days of Fanfiction Day Nine:

9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

Supernatural is obviously Dean/Cas and...hmm. I have a Uriel/Cas story waiting patiently on my hard drive right now, and I'm writing Dean/Cas/Lisa for my Birthdayfest fic in Sept. I like Cas/Anna, especially the bittersweet, longing Cas/Anna, and I like Dean/Cas/Anna even more (I have a half-plotted out "When The Levees Break" AU that goes along those lines). And I have a real fondness for Cas/Jo; I have a half-plotted out "Abandon All Hope" AU that goes in that direction.

But still, even the fics where he isn't with Dean he's still with Dean, if that makes any sense. If there isn't some profound bonding going on it doesn't feel right to me. Sigh. My OTP, let me show you it.

In Heroes I was all about Peter/Claude and to a lesser extent Claude/Bennet. Claude was what got me writing Heroes in the first place and no other character really stepped up to fill that role once he was gone. He was basically my Castiel for that fandom.

For Doctor Who my pairing was Doctor/Rose, especially Nine/Rose. I also ship Jack/Doctor (especially Jack/Doctor/Rose) and Fitz/Doctor, because Fitz is adorable.

Left 4 Dead 2, the only pairing I write is Nick/Ellis, and in JLU I ship Question/Huntress hard.

Dear Persephone:

Look, I get it. Being Queen of the Underworld is a pretty sweet gig. You have an awesome three-headed dog, no one gives you guff, and the kick-ass garden Hades made for you has pomegranates all through the winter.

Seriously, though: Go Home. They're predicting 2-4 inches of snow tonight. Your mom is mad and taking it out on us. It hailed today.

Go home. Hug your mother. I miss the sun.

(And no, Cerberus giving you the puppy eyes is not a reason to stick around. I know he has more than the average dog. Bring him cake in October and he'll be fine.)

I used google docs for the first time today! I think I may even have done it right!

TV Guide is running another contest, this one called the Fan Favorite Awards.

I mention this for two reasons: first, Supernatural is up for Sci-Fi show (somewhere a hard sci-fi geek is apoplectic over Supernatural being called sci-fi), so Misha is flogging it on his twitter, and if SPN wins there's the possibility he'll give us cake.

Secondly, will you look at the Favorite Non-Human Character category? It's Cas versus every vampire on TV, or close to it. This is a hunt that's gone terribly wrong.

You can vote as many times as you want. I'm going to help Cas beat up some more bloodsuckers now

ETA: Oh, God, Misha Collins and Jim Beaver are taking set pictures of each other with their camera phones and posting them on twitter. Oh, guys. (Word of warning, that second link is possibly spoilery.)

All In, the new Lifehouse song, isn't the greatest song ever --- it's kind of every Lifehouse song ever, and shamelessly reuses the riff to "First Time" --- but it's such a Nick/Ellis song to me that I still turn it up whenever I catch it on the radio. It hits that sweet spot when Nick stops digging in his heels and finally admits there's something going on here. I love my angsty zombie-killing dream ship.

Not dream as in perfect, although they are pretty much a distillation of everything pings a ship for me, but dream because I didn't even realize I shipped them until I had a dream about them. A dream about how I couldn't find any decent fanfic for this, a pairing I hadn't even been aware I was shipping. My subconscious just went, "Well, this is happening." (This is the second time my brain let me know via dream that it was off shipping without me; while I was watching Boomtown I had an incredibly graphic dream about two characters who had barely shared screen time, but who my brain had decided would be awesome together. It actually altered how I watched the show.:)

A show (or movie or book or what have you) showing up in my dreams is always my first sign that I'm about to lose my head. I dreamed about Watchmen the night I got home from the movie. I had Cas in my head three episodes into season 4. Does that happen to anyone else?

I wasn't going to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] dark_fest --- I defaulted last year --- but I to continue the theme I had a dream about the prompt I eventually chose. (Um. Sorry, Cas. You know you're my favorite, right?)

Our warlock rolled a nat 1 while eldritch blasting bad guys and had to draw from the critical fumble deck. The card he drew meant that the invocation worked like a Rod of Wonder, meaning he got to roll on the chart. The first roll turn the eldritch blast into a fireball.

The second turned it into gems.

Cue rampant Old Spice and Scott Pilgrim quoting. ("Your eldritch blast is now diamonds!)

I didn't get a single trick-or-treater this year! Not one! And I bought all this candy! (I know, my life, so hard.)

I'm celebrating the way I do every year, watching A Nightmare On Elm Street 1 & 3, and it's making me crave fic where Sam and Dean have to deal with Freddy. If only the parents had known to salt and burn the remains (not that they weren't already burned, but you know what I mean)! Or if Nancy's mom had just burned his glove instead of keeping it in the basement! This all could have been avoided!

ETA: I'm at the part where Nancy's rigging her room to catch Freddy and the girl would have have made one hell of a hunter. This is all right around when John had just started out hunting --- maybe she got to teach him a few tricks about taking out evil spirits.:)

Has anyone ever heard those blood drive radio ads featuring the Red Defender? I like imagining he's from the Doctor Horrible universe, purely because that would mean he would be forced to socialize with Captain Hammer. And Red Defender has such horrible luck (for example, after saving the Earth from an asteroid only to accidentally destroy the moon: "Where did you throw that asteroid?" "Away. I threw it...away.") that I can't see Captain Hammer helping. Even if everything did go right on one of their team-ups, I'm sure Captain Hammer would somehow wind up hogging all of the credit.

I had no idea just how geeky the casting for the new Nightmare on Elm Street is. Over the course of the film Rorschach will get to slice and dice:

Emmett from Twilight. (It is Emmett, right? Unless [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's writing it I don't know from Twilight.)

John Connor from Sarah Connor Chronicles.

    Blonde Ruby from Supernatural

    Bart Allen from Smallville

And that's without counting Clancy Brown, better known as the Kurgan and the voice of Lex Luthor in everything. The only one of the main cast who doesn't have some sort of geek cache is the girl playing Nancy (which is hilarious, considering that if the movie stays true to the original she'll be the one to make it out. Maybe that's the secret?).

Today's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Name 5 characters you like but that you wouldn't hire to work with you.

Man, most of the characters I like would be horrible employees. It would be a much shorter list if I tried to figure out who I would hire.

Like Donna Noble. I would absolutely hire Donna, no matter what the business. She would be a ridiculously efficient office manager and I would never have to worry about the other employees embezzling to abusing sick time.

Ooh. Donna working for a company that had Thrawn as the CEO. There would be no stopping that monopoly.

Until I looked up the cast on IMDB I was sure that the bad guy in The Losers was being played by John Shea. Apparently he's actually Jason Patric, which is all well and good I suppose but how much cooler would it have been if the movie had actually been about Uhura recruiting a team led by The Comedian and Captain America to take down Lex Luthor? So much cooler.

Also, the first time I saw The Losers trailer I thought it was a trailer for the A-Team. I'm still not sure I'm wrong.

Changing subjects slightly, I intend to go into Kick Ass with the mindset that it's taking place in the Watchmen 'verse, where Adrian's plan steered the world away from nuclear war but didn't create a utopia. Now kids born long after the Keene act controversy are rediscovering the concept of superheroes and deciding that sounds like the thing to do. Nic Cage dressing alarmingly like Dan in the trailer is doing nothing to dissuade me from this delusion.:) (this partially stems from a RL conversation about what Rorschach would think about the kids in Kick Ass going around heroing. I think he'd be all for it as long as the kids were doing it For Justice and not celebrity. Especially since in the movie timeline he wasn't much older when he got his start --- he's twenty when they take that group picture, after all, and that wasn't his first day on the job. Heck, assuming that Kitty Genovese's murder is still his catalyst (and there's nothing in the movie to suggest otherwise) he could have started as young as fourteen.)

Check this out!

[livejournal.com profile] dark_fest

The multifandom fest for fanfiction with dark themes has just opened for prompt submission. We're looking for prompts in any fandom that will give a writer a chance to tell a dark and twisted tale. This is a fest about difficult subject matter, moral ambiguities, unhappy endings, no win scenarios, secrets, lies and shames, psychological messes, a look into the void, bad deeds, bad thoughts, bad decisions, twists of the canon mood or themes, pure evil, or good intentions paving the road to hell.

Prompt submission is open now until February 14th.
Prompt claiming runs from February 15th - February 25th, with finished fics due by April 8th.
For more info, check out the FAQ here

It's set up like the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest, a prompt challenge instead of a fic exchange and you can submit prompts without having to commit yourself to writing. I submitted some prompts already, and since I already have fics on my plate I'm unlikely to participate further unless I stumble over a prompt that makes a fic spill fully-formed from my brain to the computer.
